William Driver

Captain William Driver who, as mate on the Clay, employed mutineer Manila-men he found in Fiji to smoke beche-de-mer by a method that had previously been unknown to Americans. The huge profits he earned when he sold his cargoes in Manila in the 1820s sparked the Fiji beche-de-mer trade.
