Sir Arthur Gordon and Louis Knollys

Sir Arthur Gordon, the Lord Stanmore, was the first Governor of the British colony of Fiji, from 1875 to 1880. He had previously been Governor of Trinidad (1866-1870) and Mauritius (1871-1874) where Indian indentured labourers were already used. It was his decision to use indentured labour from India on plantations in Fiji that saw the arrival of the first Girmit in 1879. He is photographed here (on the right) with his friend and aide-de-camp, Captain Louis Knollys (left).
