Drua sketches

The drua, kalia (Tonga) or alia (Samoa) which was perfected in Fiji in the late 1700s. Sailing close to the wind, these huge canoes soon replaced the tongiaki and revolutionised Fijian and Tongan relationships. By the early 1800s, Tongan canoe building colonies were well established in Fiji and the Vava'u chiefs were playing a more and more dominant part in Fijian affairs.
