Matkas or clay pots were used by Girmityas to store water or milk. The special quality of a matka which made it ideal for storing liquids is that it keeps its contents cool. It is unclear what this matka was used for exactly, but it may have been used ceremonially for a Hindu ritual in which it was purposely broken. The crack in the matka has been cemented over.
