Tanoa King of Ambau

The image of Tanoa Visawaqa, titled ‘Tanoa King of Ambau’ was drawn in 1840 by Alfred Agate, a member of the Wilkes United States Exploring Expedition to the Pacific. Tanoa is seen wearing the breastplate which has similar features to the Raravono Salusalu. Tanoa was the Vunivalu of Bau and Ratu Seru Cakobau’s father. His high status is also shown by his vesa (shell armband) and his white masi sala (headpiece) and sulu.
