Firearms and Cannons (1800s)

Contact with the world outside the Pacific brought with it new weapons and methods of warfare. The Fijians were very quick to adopt these and adapt them to their needs. Rapid changes in gun technology during the 1800s saw firearms become increasingly reliable and more deadly. With no local metalworking or manufacturing, foreign traders were able to control the supply of firearms and ammunition and wielded considerable political influence as a result.
